Theakston returns to the fold; whither Black Sheep?

Just saw a news report that Scottish & Newcastle are in "advanced negotiations" to return the Theakston brands, brewery, and visitor center to the Theakston family (four brothers, headed by Simon Theakston) as early as October. Might turn out well for everyone.

I wonder what the member of that auguste family, that started the Black Sheep brewery is going to make of that. Nice start of a family blood-feud. JorisP

I was thinking the same thing. Hey, maybe it's a good time for the Black Sheep to rejoin the fold.

I doubt it. I think S&N will drop the Theakston beers as quickly as possible and replace them with more John Smiths, Fosters and Baltika and whatever other crap they sell. They destroyed their own brewing heritage in Edinburgh, for heavens sake.

The Theakstons will be left with a portfolio of beers whose reputations have been ruined by 20 years of S&N control and find it increasingly difficult to gain distribution once any preferential deals with S&N run out, as they inevitably will. They will not be in a strong position to appeal to either the mass market or real ale drinkers.

I would be delighted to be wrong.

And that's what I doubt. Theakston has still people remembering it fondly in their own area. They could do what every small regional does - certainly if the extension of the sliding duty scale gets trough - and with a head start at that. Plus there's the American market(s) they could try to exploit, given that they really restore Old Peculier to its former glory. If this goes through they have a decent chance. Up to them to make it happen. Cheers, Joris

Look folks you are all labouring under a grave mis-understanding. S&N don't make beer, they don't make any sort of beveridge. They make MONEY. Pure and simple.
