Maintaining a steam nozzle

I have a Krups machine[1] which makes a reasonable job of espresso, and notionally also does cappuccino. The latter has never really been up to the standard of the espresso[2], but occasionally I like a cup (and I have one friend who *always* drinks it:-)

I've always tried to keep the steam nozzle clean by wiping with a damp cloth after every use. But that is apparently not enough: this morning it is completely blocked:-( This has happened once before and I was able to clear it with a pin or needle - neither of which I can find just now.

If I am able to unblock it again, what should I do to keep it unblocked, in a kitchen where physically moving it more than once in a blue moon (like, for regular cleaning) is not really an option?

[1] The only more specific information is a label on the bottom saying "type 880". The review at

looks very similar, but it's not the same as pictured there. Krups's own website is devoid of anything remotely useful. Further research finds

which looks sufficiently similar it's probably "this years version" of the same model. [2] Having lived several years in central Italy, I think I may be more demanding than most people from the English-speaking world:-)

The easiest way to keep it unblocked is to soak it in a cup of water or club soda between uses, or overnight after using it.

The best way to clean the frothing attachment on a super automatic coffee machines is with a cleaning brush designed for frothing attachments. Generally it's not a good idea to use soda water as this can affect the inox polish finish. There is also a milk frother cleaning solution available which will break down milk solids but not affect the finish on your equipment.
