dry hopping

Hi all Can anyone in the group offer advice regarding dry hopping. I understand the principle, I think, by adding dry hops that you can achieve more of a hop aroma to your beer. When is the best time to add the dry hops and how much, say in a 10 litre batch of wort.

Many thanks in advance Greg

I had this same question about a month ago. I got a lot of help from the group, so you'll probably get som good feedback also. I made my first IPA last week and this week I transfered to the secondary. This is when you'll want to add your dry hops. How much you use depends on how much extra flavor you want. Most of the feedback I got suggested 1 to 2 oz for a 5 gal batch. I used 1oz of cascade for mine. My metric conversion isn't that good but I believe 10l is pretty close to 1/2gal, so you would probably want to use 1/2 to 1oz. Again it all depends on how much flavor you want. Good luck.

Cheers, Mike

Sorry I meant 10l is close to 2-1/2gal.

Not much of a hophead, are you? :)

(I prefer that my grapefruit juice have a bit of malt in it.)

2 ounces of cascade at 60 for an IPA? That's what I use for an APA. I guess I like more hops than you do. :)

I guess that depends on the AA of the hops. They vary considerably between varieties and then there's seaonal variation as well. Low is around 2.5% and high can be over 10%. I think hop calculations expressed as IBU's is more accurate. Steve W.

I haven't dry hopped a lot but I usually put the hops in the secondary when I transfer. 1 ounce is nice.

You said Cascade. (I prefer Columbus, but ...)
