Fermentation Temperature ?

I don't have central heating in my house and when the large gas heater kicks on and off it does not keep a constant temp at any one location in the house, sometimes areas are too cold and sometimes areas are too hot. I am concerned that my fermentation process will get screwed up if I don't keep the temp at 70-75 degrees. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might maintain a constant temp. Thanks, Andy

I made a box with a false bottom and a 40w bulb under it with an old central heating controller. Maybe overkill but I had a the bits already so it didn't cost me anything!

Hope this helps,

Keith.

I don't see why you would want such a high temp. What style are you brewing? Most ales ferment nicely in the low-mid 60s. What yeast are you using?

Andy I usually put my fermenter in a cool place away from the heat and wrap it with an old water bed heater pad with a thermostat. I put an old swet shirt around it and stuff a thermometer inside the heater pad and I can get a rock solid 65 or 70 degrees. Just maske sure the ambient heat is a little below your desired fermenting temp.

For me the summer is difficult as I have no good way to stay cool other than AC'ing the whole house. Thats why I prefer brewing in the winter.

This doesn't work for us, in any event.

We cool the house to about 78F or so. Any lower would send our electric bill higher than the national debt of several small countries.

I use a fridge to ferment at around 65F ... that is economical.

I got an "old" fridge with the rounded top. pulled the guts out of it. these thigs are so thick and well made that once your brews at the right temp it tends to stay there whatever the outside temp. just a quick check each day and keep the door closed - perfect, and it cost nothing to run.
