Darjeeling Oolong Superior

Mar 03, 2006 2 Replies

Hi group,

I have been drinking fine Taiwanese Oolongs since many years now, supplied by the best tea merchant in Scandinavia, only a block away from me.

Recently he gave me a sample of this Darjeeling Oolong that I find very lovely. It has a most delicate fragrance in the bag, and a very light flavour when brewed for a minute.

I had never heard of Oolongs from Darjeeling before and the merchant said it was a new thing too. I would like to hear if you people here have any experience of it.

I am totally hooked on this stuff now.

Hi Lars, Darjeeling (DJ) Oolongs have been around for quite a few years now, for example Gopaldhara (FOP1, Red Thunder), Poobong (Black Musc), Rohini (Goldwire), Singbulli (Super Fancy OOlong), Soom, ... to name a few, with more to come. (Just today a chinese tea delegation arrived (as well as a german), I'll get more information tomorrow.) Though not specifically manufactured to be gong-fued, DJ Ooolongs can be quite exquisite (2005 Autumnal Gopaldhara Red Thunder). Keeping that in mind I'd advise against the traditional washing of the leaves as the first step in gong-fu, too much flavour gets lost here. One of the main reasons are those thin leaves of the plants grown here, opposed to the much thicker leaves most Chinese and Taiwanese Oolongs are made of, and of course a different way of manufacturing those leaves. PS: I'm waiting for a batch of a special DJ Oolong, if everything works fine, I should have it by the end of next week. If you're interested you can PM me and I'll send you a free sample.

BTW: do you know the estate you're DJ Oolong comes from ? Just curious ...

Greetings from the "queen of hills" :-) Karsten / Darjeeling

I will, I'd love to have a sample!

No, I am afraid I don't. Ii comes in one of those aluminium foil /plastic bag, with a label they write up in the store. It says Darjeeling Oolong 714.

Here is a picture of it;

Same pile of tea, only half of it is shot with flash and the other without.
