green tea - how many cups is too much?

Hello, I am passionated green-tea drinker. I drink 3 to 6 cups everyday, and I know it sounds too much, but it's like a habbit. I would like to know what is the maximum number of cups that doesn't makes the side effects (because of coffeine and so...), and what is actually the optimal and healtiest dosage of green tea?

Best regards

Ask your doctor.

For the most part, this group discusses tea from the point of view of tasting good and liking it. When we do get around to the question of caffeine, the bottom line tends to be that how much caffeine is in a cup of tea depends on a lot of things, including the specific tea and how it was brewed. Then there is the question of how much caffeine is too much for you. Avoiding any bad effects due to too much caffeine will depend on various aspects of your health. More generally, if you are drinking tea as a form of self-medication, your best advice about the safest way to reach your goal (whatever it is) will come from your doctor.

Well, green, in general, is thought to have a lesser caffine content than black or oolong teas, particularly the former (some greens, especially shade-grown high grades, can have much more caffine). 3-6 cups of green seems to me to be a light-to-moderate intake (I wouldn't worry until you get up to 18 or 20, and then your budget would probably be feeling a hit, too).

However, all this depends on the size of the "cup". I'm going on stats dealing with 4-6 oz. cups, I think. I should think you would be able to drink a few dozen small 1oz Chinese cups without harm (depending on your tea and your caffine sensitivity).

Of course, If you're pregnant or nursing, you probably already know that the little guy can't get caffine out of his system yet, so you need to limit it severely in yours.

I heard of an article recently stating that a man suffered from hallucinations due to a 20-cup-a-day Jasmine habit. I don't know what size the "cup"s were, or if this guy was doing anything else of interest, so I'm sceptical. Try drinking twenty cups daily of coffee or soda and see where you end up. Worse than hallucinations. I think tea comes out on top again.

Using the very general (and somewhat dubious) statistics in Kit Chow's "All About Tea", I once calculated that a two-cup-a-day habit of coffee is about equivalent to an 18-cup-a-day habit of green tea, not counting subsequent infusions of leaves (which, I am under the impression, have much reduced caffine). Again, some greens have a lot more caffine. You just have to know your tea. See if a cup or two before bed keeps you awake at night.

I just try to th>
