What have you been drinking?

While I would prefer sencha (Japanese green) all the time, I usually treat it more like a rare dessert. Cinnamon is probably my second favourite, but I haven't been drinking it this past year. This year's rotation, listed in order of frequency:

-green decaffeinated

-roasted buckwheat

-fennel, anise, caraway

-hojicha, aka roasted green. One of my favourites.

-kukicha, aka green twig tea. New to me, I dig it. Almost a sweet flavour. Will get more for sure.

In the summer I also drank lots of a cold barley infusion. Another infusion which is kind-of sweet.

I have been drinking dahongpao!

More on this as it develops in the cup! Note that dahongpao also makes an excellent ice cream flavouring.

No drinks for me, but the rotation you've got seems to be centered around comforting roasted, lower caffeine teas, mainly hojicha, soba, and kukicha, with some herbal digestifs on the side.

I have been drinking teas from Burma!

They are all wild-grown and all very different than trad Chinese and Indian teas.

Thanks for this! Myanmakers is a short subway trip from where I live.

Let me know if you visit! I don't think they are tea people and I am curious how much they know about what they are selling.

You may not be THAT far from shanvalley.com in New Jersey either.

I did visit their bricks and mortar location, and no, they aren’t tea people. But I don’t regret having gone, as you can see in this Mastodon thread:

Long story short: of the three teas I got, the really interesting one is the Zayan Sour Tea.

Just to say: I can't help but hear W.C. Fields' mother in law when I read that subject line. "Ambrose Wolfinger, just WHAT have you been drinking?"

I think the sour tea is fermented in bamboo, using a process sort of reminiscent of pu ehr, but I have never actually tried it. A sauerkraut flavour would be interesting.

I'd like to try it, but the three-tea sampler you got doesn't seem to be listed on their website or available through their amazon store either!

Did you get any of that "wild tea" thing that is kind of like oak but not really?

--scott

No, just the 3-pak. If you want to taste something very much like the Zayan Sour Tea, you can find the same kind of tea made by the same ethnic group (the De’ang) across the border in China, where it’s known as Suan Cha.

/Lew

Sorry, I mean did you experience any of the "wild tea" flavour in any of those three?

--scott

Hmm, “kind of like oak” isn’t really something I’m familiar with. Maybe that’s a “no”?

By the way, I *have* tasted tea manufactured from non-C. sinensis leaves, most recently C. crassicolumna.
