a dram of good scotch is heaven on earth, no?

Last night I got home. The days work was done. Nothing to do but sit with a dram of Ardbeg.

First I smell deeply several times, before I take a sip. My wife thinks I am trying to be obnoxious by smelling my drink before taking a sip.

No matter, I sniff again, then take a slow sip. I savor the water of life for several seconds before (with regret) swallowing the elixor.

"I am not being obnoxious, this is really how people are supposed to drink Scotch."

It was time for another sip.

Totally. I smell anything I eat or drink, but with my Islay drams, its more a case of inhaling than drinking. Each sip sits on my tongue as I breathe out over it, and inhale the fumes through nose and mouth before swallowing.

Heaven on Earth indeed :)

The message from "William Anderson" contains these words:

Yes, it is indeed heaven on earth! I avoid these chunky "whisky glasses" of expensive cut crystal lead glass like the plague, and nose, then drink out of small tulip glasses from Ikea, warmed in my hot sweaty paw!

And as I was taught in the chemistry lab at school, aged 10, take it slowly - first look at it carefully - colour, clarity and surface tension - then sniff, and only then, if no danger signs, sip. Just the same with wine or whisky!

Yes I use a tulip glass, and when drinking cask strength malts, after the full-strength taste I love to watch the water mixing when I have added a drop or two, and then swirl it and watch it's viscosity cause it to cling to the sides of the glass.

Nice post! First of all: Yes, thats something which happed to me also (smelling... while wife is complaining about this habit...) Second: Ardbeg is a wonderfull dram... because when I've enjoyed a glas in my study late at night, and put the empty glass on the stairs on my way down to the sleeping room (to transport it onother stair down to the kitchen to clean the next morning...), and go for a deep sleep... the next morning when I wake up and enter the hall near the stairs... I SMELL ARDBEG AGAIN... that sweet, unique smell of Ardbeg! There is no other whisky which compete that!
