Bourbon casks

In my experience the flavours are more subtle than clear. And bourbon casks are not common. I think Glemorangie have dome a bottling... but it's usually independent bottlers like Scotch malt Whisky Society that do them.

Usually, all scotch whiskies mature in ex-bourbon casks, since sherry butts are very rare.

I forgot to say that scotch whisky, as someone told me, never mature in new casks. So I think that if you're searching for a bourbon-like scotch, it'll be very hard to find.

I wouldn't say "never." Supposedly Aberlour and Glenfiddich have malts that are a mixture of various kinds of casks, including new oak casks. And Glenmorangie has at least one variant that is matured exclusively in new casks. I read this online, so it must be true...

Thanks for your replies ... I understand Glenmorangie uses bourbon casks, as does Laphroiag ... the former is a bit bland, whereas the latter would be overpowered by the peat/creosote ... any middle ground suggestions ...?!

Not the Double Wood, which has Sherry as the second, but the Single Barrel (Single Cask ??) version, which is strictly bourbon.

Longrow 10yr Bourbon... Great whisky! and much better than the 10yr sherry cask... imho... On the other hand... don't know if this qualifies for a typical bourbon maturing??? nevertheless its one of the best 'bourbonmatures' whiskies I've had...

Never heard Glanmorangie or any other single malt described as "bland" before... Even the least good malt I've ever drunk - 5yo Old Fettercairn was not bland. Fiery and immature yes!"!

If you're referrering to becoming a Society member then the answer is yes. It will cost you about GBP 15, I believe. In view of the corresponding benefits I think its worth every penny (particularly if the Springbank distillery or any of the Cadenhead shops is nearby). As for the mentioned visibility, you may have a valid point there. There is perhaps room for improvement shall we say ;-)
