A great athlete indeed, 7 in a row is quite an achievement.
Only reservation compared to the old time greats would be that he concentrates his season on 2 maybe 3 events tops.
Others are or were competing also in the Giro and the Vuelta as well, some greats of the past even won 2 out of 3 in the same season plus many "classiques" like Liege - Bastogne - Liege, Paris - Roubais, Milan - San Remo etc...
Nevertheless he is quite good and all the rumours of doping are just that, rumours.
And frankly, who can believe anyone can cycle for 3 weeks at an average of 40+ kph a day and only drink spring water ???? A superior athlete will remain superior.....
True, but the sport has progressed, as have all sports. In this case, cycling is such that without doing so, one cannot win the big TDF. Too big, to sophisticated, too competitive. Even Eddie the cannibal could not beat Lance today...I post HUMBLY as my opinion. Well, he might if he were to concentrate all of his training on the Tour, but that's my point. And let's not forget, even he lost one. In 20 years, the legacy of Lance will be that he was the greatest tour racer of all times, and he will deserve that title.
Basso did this because CSC believed he did not have a chance at besting Armstrong, and CSC is probably the best managed Tour team save Discovery. They were correct. And, notice that he conveniently "slumped" in the spring. Note that Basso peaked at the Tour. Furthermore, Lance is old--a few years ago he had a more impressive preseason regimen (i.e. T of Switz)
Unless you're a member of the at large cycling community, or a conservative moralist (very popular these days, it seems, at least in the States). Most of the peleton dislike him, and he goes through women like yellow jerseys. Consequently, many object to saluting him as a hero. I, however, am indeed a fan. So do I need to crack open my HP 18 to participate in this salute?
I still haven't opened it; I had four new (to me) malts, and I decided on opening the Dalwhinnie 15. Like most experiments of this type, the two things that struck me about the Dalwhinnie were how different and wonderful each new malt is...and how remarkable the true stand-outs are. I put the HP 12 into this small category of astonishingly exceptional malts (among those priced for mortals), which is why I went forward with the HP 18 purchase. That, and in NYC it was outrageously cheap. When synthesizing this group's input, plus MJ and JM, I have had little surprises, so I expect that (according to my taste) I will like the HP 18.
I think I got mine for around $40-$45 in Wyoming (I lived in Utah). Also, Pop's Wine has it for $41.68, plus I think they charge $2/bottle flat fee when you order several. They will ship, or "arrange" for shipment, as the law may state.
