What should be one the shelves in a decent Whisky bar?

We are trying to find out what to have in stock in our whiskybar. In Poland it is hard to get the golden drink and we would like to offer our costumers good opportunities to enjoy their stay. Is it possible to include the wide palette of taste in 40-50 different bottles? What should be found to satisfy the novice-drinker? We have some ideas already but I would like to hear from you out there.

Only rule is: Jonnie Walker MUST be represented in four types (black, red, gold, blue) as they are sponsoring some of the project. (like a comment on that as well)

(Wrong group I know - but if some people of any reason should ask for whiskey or even bourbon, what do we then do? Is it good taste to know what is bad taste? J)

Best regards & merry Christmas

Even if you do not speak polish (Henrik U does not sound very polish ;) ) most of us speak English and other languages, so there will be no problems with communication.

Whereabout in Poland is the bar that offers / inteds to offer as many as

40-50 different whiskies? I'd love to visit the place, and if that's anywhere within 200 km from where I live - you've got a regular customer already...

Seriously though, as Poland's such a whisky desert, anything you can get hold of will be more than welcome by whisky lovers. Provided you know how to get to them and lure them to your bar. You definitely need a solid base of the standard expressions, and those representing all the regions/styles, plus a few extra-fantastic (read: expensive) ones. The standard category should, IMO, include the most basic expressions of: Islay: Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Caol Ila Campeltown: Springbank, Longrow Speyside: Macallan, Aberlour, Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Knockando, Glenrothes, Glenlivet, Mortlach (if you can get hold of it), Glenfarclas, Highlands: Oban, Dalwhinnie, Glenmorangie, Dalmore, Old Pulteney, Lowlands: Auchentoshan Islands: Highland Park, Talisker, Arran.

The above have been quoted off the top of my head, so I'm sure I overlooked one or two great distilleries.

As to the extra-special category, I suggest something older/more rare from Ardbeg (e.g. 25yo Lord of the Isles), Highland Park (e.g. 25yo), Aberlour (e.g. a'bunadh), Glenfarclas 21yo, Springbank 21yo (if you can get hold of it), or some independent expressions.

Good luck, Rajmund

On 3 Dec 2003 01:32:30 -0800, the alleged Henrik U, may have posted the following, to alt.drinks.scotch-whisky:

Ardbeg 10 Ardbeg [17|18] Balvenie Double Wood Bowmore 21 Glenfiddich Solera Glenmorangie Glenmorangie Maderia Finish Glenmorangie Port Finish Johnnie Walker Red Johnnie walker Black Johnnie Walker Gold Johnnie Walker Blue Knockando Macallan Macallan 18 Macallan 25 Springbank 12 Springbank 15 Lagavulin Laphriaog 10 Laphroaig 15 Talisker 10

That's "Bourbon", and some discussion has always been permitted in this group. Lew Bryson, Ryan Stotz and myself have been the usual offenders in bringing up the subject of Bourbon. I'd recommends the following:

Booker's Blanton's Buffalo Trace Four Roses Henry McKenna Special Reserve Jim Beam (7 YO) Knob Creek Maker's Mark Woodford Reserve

As far as whiskey goes, George Dickel and Jack Daniel's aren't too bad.

Regards, Rob

Highland Park should be on the shelves of every licensed establishment in the world, in my opinion. It's a deliciously smooth whisky which should suit novices as well as satisfying the most discerning of experienced paletes.

Good point. If there is a classier all-rounder anywhere I have no idea what it is. The texture is silk, and the heather/honey flavor is a natural for anyone to enjoy.
