East coast US shops?

Ok, I've given up on finding a good shop in the southern US, so I'm extending the search to the whole east coast. I'm figuring the only way I'm going to get anything beyond the 12 year expressions is to go on a road trip.

So, I guess it's the northeast? New York, Boston, somewhere in there? Anyone know of a shop that has a wide variety?

Thanks!

Would help to tell us what you are lookin' for.

Here in the Southern US (being NC) we have Caol Ila 18, Lagavulin 16, and Laphroig 15, along with many others.

New York has a lot more to offer (Park Ave., etc.) but we do have two shops here in DC with over 100 bottlings each. One actually claims to have 250, but my live count never gets quite that high.

BTW, Pearson's Wine in Atlanta and Red Dog Wine and Spirits in Franklin, TN are both in the Malt Advocate's "100+" club. Have you tried either of them?

That would be the "new and improved" Central Liquors at 9th and F? Here's a list:

Hopefully, the link is not regarded as a "commercial" since I intend it for the benefit of the OP (and others). Besides, some yankees do consider D.C. to be the "South."

Wash. DC is below the Mason and Dixon Line.

No, haven't given them a go. I'll add them to my list, as I'm near the last two you mention - my being in NC. Thank you kindly!

That's just it, there's not much I haven't tried in NC (where I am as well). I suppose my biggest interests are the sherried Macallan- and Balvenie-ish types, and other expressions of the Islay standards. That would be the two regions I enjoy most.

New owners, but I would not say improved at all. Quite the contrary -- no real knowledge there any more.

So is all of Maryland (duh), most of Delaware and a big chunk of NJ. So what?

Lost me. I was responding to something about yankees thinking Wash DC was in the South, which you snipped. Bye.

Park Avenue Liquors (actually on Madison Ave) is the promised land. The greatest liquor store I have ever been to.

IMO, the Cannery in San Francisco is the best I've seen in the US, followed by Sam's in Chicago and Park Ave.

Of course, La Maison du Whisky in Paris, WhiskyWorld and De Koning in the Netherlands, one shop in Germany (whose name escapes me at the moment) and several place in the UK dwarf anything in the US.

And with airfares as capricious as they CAN be, you might be better off flying to SFO or NYC or ORD with two big bags to shlep stuff back with (the general policy now is if each of your two checked bags weigh 50 lb. or less, you can check them no problem--you can pad them with newspaper if you don't want your bottles to rattle around). Plus, you can ride the cable cars.
