West Coast wineries

Hi all,

Well, our trip to the West Coast is almost over. After nearly 5 weeks here we'll be leaving for the east Coast on about 4 or 5 days. In the meantime we're enjoying ourselves like mad with Ken Blake (occasional afw-er) and his lovely wife Eileen, who came to stay with us last Summer.

I'm not going to attempt the impossible and put all the wineries in any kind of batting order, nor classify the wines. I WILL on the other hand mention a few places where for one reason or another I really loved the visit. Often because of the warmth of the welcome and the passion of the winemaker as much as for the wines themselves.

In Washington (Walla Walla), Woodward Canyon Winery & 'K'.

Oregon Willamette Valley - Chehalem & Willakenzie

Anderson Valley (CA)

Lazy Creek

Sonoma & Napa

Grgich Hills, Shafer, Williams Selyem, Phelps (of course), Cline & Stony Hill.

So there we have it! A wonderful visit, (many wonderful visits) many wonderful wines, and good friends made.

Thanks to all those whose advice, suggestions and help enabled us to put such a wonderful trip together.

All the best Ian Hoare

Ah! You stopped there. It was worth it, no?

Too bad you never called this week... a visitor from the Continent would be a good reason to play hookie.

Absolutely! Anthony King of Acacia (another lovely visit) recommended them to us, and we just arrived without warning. Had a very warm welcome, swapped anecdotes, tasted lovely wines and gave Josh my recipe for my favourite terrine de campagne. He threatens to pop in and visit us in France next spring, which would be wonderful.

Dana, I know, I felt really bad about not having contacted you, but we simply ran right out of time. Half the days we were having to phone ahead to warn that we were running late, and in general we hardly had time to eat lunch! Tom found the early morning starts too testing on a couple of days, and it was just about all we could do to do all the visits. Any suggestions that yours truly talked too much with the winemakers etc are entirely true and entirely unnecessary. All the best

Ian

I don't think I suggested Lazy Creek to you, under the impression that you wouldn't be straying that far north. It's a must-stop for me and has been since Josh took over several years ago. I'm glad that you found it anyway.

Heh! Not to worry - I was just rankling your chain. As it was, my pal Don was in town for a few days and I used up whatever goof-off time I had with him.

Cheers! Dana

My wife and I happened upon Lazy Creek just a few weeks after Josh and Mary Beth acquired it. We've been fans ever since. At that time, you had to have a little inside info to know exactly where it was (only a mailbox at the road, with the name of a previous owner, I think). It was, and continues to be, one of those very special experiences.
