Greeting & Delurk

I've been lurking for a bit and have greatly enjoyed the posts. One of my favorite bottles is a Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottling of a 14 year Macallan that was aged in a Bowmore cask (24.61) that weighs in at

60.5% by volume. I haven't noticed much commentary on SMWS bottlings and was wondering if their product is held in low esteem, or what. I have several dozen different bottles from them and have found most to be, at the least, very interesting drams.

Anyone else tried the 24.61 and care to comment?

I've had several SMWS-bottlings that have been absolute heaven, and some again that haven't been much to write home about...

But in general these bottlings har hard to come by. And one of the problems is that, as with other single cask-bottlings, that if the whisky is extremely good - you will rarely get the opportunity to get another bottle, and if you tell anybody about it your chances are even less.

My opinion is that the SMWS-bottlings are of the highest quality, I just don't get to taste them allt hat often as I would like to.

Welcome to the conversation.

I'm interested in the SMWS bottlings but the fact that they are not available except to members probably limits their reach and consequently the amount of discussion about them. There have occassionally been some comments in this group over the years, mostly favorable comments I might add, but you're right they haven't been a big topic of discussion. Love to hear more about your experience with them.

I recently attended a tasting of 5 different bottles from them... all very interesting... so much so that I would consider joining the society just to get access to some of them.

However.. I don't know how their stuff would be treated coming into Ontario, and that can be a big deal.. (the Tax/surcharge situation here raises prices by about 80%).

Bart, What initially attracted me to their offerings was the incredible diversity of the offerings. Ages, distilleries, styles, and the "re-combinations" involving one cask racked into another, etc. I've sampled a very wide spectrum and there have been only 2 bottles that struck me as ho hum. Further, the personal service that you receive when you are ordering is fantastic.

Matter of fact, I believe I will delve into a 31 year old Caperdonach (distilled in '70, 56.4 abv). I'm about half way through this bottle and it is really quite mesmerizing. A symphony of "staged" vanilla and butter tones that dance about that pairs very well with aged Virginia pipe tobacco.
