Lagavulin Back in Stock

Noticed yesterday that after having been unavailable since last winter, Lagavulin is back on the shelves here in Nova Scotia. Price remains at $75 and change (Canadian). Also for $10 more we have the Distiller's edition now listed here. Actually, the entire range of Distiller's editions is now available (Talisker, Oban, Cragganmore, etc) and I may have to give some of them a try. I'm particularly interested in picking up the Oban since regular Oban has been similarly unavailable here for a few months and has not returned as yet.

That's a lot of money Greg. I've just bought a bottle of Lagavuling for:

35,30 euro and two bottles of Laphraoig (it wat the whisky of the week...) for 27 euro a bottle...

I'd gladly pay $75 for a bottle of Lagavulin 16 right now -- the entire state of Oregon seems to be out of it, and every liquor store gives me the same story -- won't be any more before January, and I'd better be in line to grab it then.

Managed to find a bottle in the Halifax Shopping Centre, but had some difficulty in getting the staff there to sell it to me.

That's hilarious, sort of! Given that they're a shop, what was their justification for *not* wanting to sell it?!

That's interesting - wasn't it on the shelf? I didn't think the NSLC kept stuff behind the counter any more.

It has also returned to Denver - at nearly twice the price as last year. Fortunately my gf is finding Ardbeg to be an acceptable substitute.

Hi H,

I noticed your post on the whisky newsgroup and since you're in Halifax, was wondering if you'd be interested in receiving a copy of my whisky newsletter -- the cover piece is on Lagavulin. If you're interested send me your snail mail address and I'll send a copy out to you this week.

I had no trouble finding it in B.C. throughout the summer, but I was in a liquor store today, and they were all out. The manager said he doesn't know when they'll be getting any.

Are there any other single malts that have a smokey, rich flavor that is similar to Lagavulin 16? I'm a relatively new single malt drinker, by the way.

In B.C. liquor stores, the Talisker 10, Laphroaig 10, Ardbeg 10, Bowmore 12, 15 and others and McClelland's Islay (a baby Bowmore) all have varying combinations of smoke, peat, "islaydine" and other elements found in the Lagavulin.

All are from distilleries on the island of Islay, except for the Talisker, which is from Skye. All but some of the more exotic Bowmores are less expensive than the Lagavulin 16.

Also available here, less assertive about its island characteristics but still worth sampling is the Bruichladdich -- there's a 10 and 15 available in some stores, as I recall.

If you're in Vancouver city, the 39th and Cambie store has the broadest selection in town -- the regular stock down on the floor, the more expensive stuff at the north end of the store by the specialty wines.

There is much more to be said about all of them, and I'm sure some of the other posters here will say some of it. But if you have the time and the money, you could do much, much worse than to sample all of them at your leisure.

I also recommend you hang around this news group to pick up more suggestions, over time, about other expressions of the above malts, as well as other styles. And let us know when the spirit moves you which ones you like, and what you like about them. The responses you get will probably steer you to still more choices.

Happy hunting, Mike.
