Laphroaig smells just like burning transistors!

I'd read a lot of good things about Laphroaig whiskey in this group over the years, so I bought a bottle a few days ago. What a strong, unique, not altogether pleasant smell! I've heard that this whiskey has a smokey flavor because the malt is roasted over a peat fire, but peat smoke is NOT what came to my mind when I took a sip. Instead, I instantly occured to me that Laphroaig smells just like circuit boards and burning transistors! If you've ever been around a circuit board when a transistor overheated and smoked, I think you'll agree that's what it smells like.

That being said, it is also nutty and smokey and slightly sweet and smooth, and goes good with nuts (esp. brazilnuts).

It's not my favorite whisky though. I like both Glenlivet and Glen Fiddich better than Laphroaig. It's just too darn electronic smelling.

Yes, "phenolic" is the term to describe this aroma component, and yes, burning circuit boards do give off that smell.

I need to try that.

I find phenols in my Scotch to be distracting as well. But yes, you're not imagining it; that chemical _is_ in the heavily smoky-peaty scotches.

Ouch...that hurts :) Seriously, it's interesting that you mentioned those two brands in comparison with the Laphroaig. I used to prefer the lighter sweeter scotches like Glenlivet and Glenfiddich as well, but my palate has gradually changed, and now I much prefer the Islay scotches (Laphroaig being my favorite). I find that the strength of the peat helps to balance out the sweetness, which I find a bit overpowering in Glenlivet and Glenfiddich these days.
