Personally i also drink my cask strengths without water, but that might be too harsh for you.

I'd say that one part whisky to two parts water is too much water (and yes, your understanding is correct), i suggest you try it yourself and see which you prefer. Try one part whisky to one part water and see where it takes you.

I'm with you, but I'd go a little further. Even at cask strength, I will nose it for a while, then try the first sip as it comes out of the bottle. Then I'll add a few drops of bottled spring water at room temperature, and nose and taste again. Then a few more drops, and so on until you hit a spot where you really like it. Usually that happens fairly quickly. Sometimes the first few drops tell me this whisky needs no water at all.

I don't recall ever using as much as one part water to one part whisky. I have never drunk a malt that wouldn't be diluted beyond recognition by that much water. Why pay good money for some of the most delectable aromas and flavours on the planet, only to dilute them right out of existence?

All of that said, the best way to drink whisky is the way you enjoy it.
