The Bowmore Family

Just saw Nick mention Bowmore 17 ... my new favorite is Bowmore Darkest. I have also tried the 12 and the Legend but they don't quite do it for me though I don't dislike them.

Which one should I try next? It would be great if it was less expensive than the Darkest :-)

cheers

If you can still get hold of the old 17 yo, that's a mighty fine dram well worth the money in my opinion. But it will probably cost you more then the Darkest. Its successor the 18 yo is said to be not at all that good. I haven't tasted it myself though.

Since you mention the 12 yo, I have to say I think it has been great recently - much better then a few years back.

Have you seen theese tasting notes from Serge? :

1) Bowmore no age Legend 43.0% vol -Original- 2) Bowmore 12 y.o. Enigma 43.0% vol -Original- 3) Bowmore 18 y.o. 43.0% vol -Original- 4) Bowmore 1989 Vintage 51.8% vol -Original- 4B) Bowmore 16 y.o. 1993/07 Authentic Collection excl. Scottland 63.9% vol -Cadenhead- 5) Bowmore 23 y.o. 1974/97 49.0% vol -Signatory- 6) Bowmore 16 y.o. 1984/00 Old Master`s 60.0% vol -James MacArthur- 7) Bowmore 21 y.o. 1973/94 43.0% vol -Original- 8) Bowmore 25 y.o. 1969/94 43.0% vol -Original-

Numbers 4B and 8 are not available anymore. Regarding prices of the others I can't tell because I don't know.

Number 1 does not comes with an age, but is estimated at somewhere between 6 and 8 years. (In Germany, whiskys with a single digit age do not sell so well, so age is not stated). This whisky has a nose of vanilla, lavender, perfume, a taste of light smoke. It is quite soft when it goes down. It lacks the typical Bowmore character. I did not quite enjoy it.

Number 2 also does not display the typical Bowmore, which is more present in the other whiskys. This whisky has a nose and taste of pear, apple, sherry, lovage (Maggi). In the mouth it has a slight taste of phenol. As number 1 I think it is a little flat. Not mine.

Number 3 is a typical Bowmore, while supposedly not quite as good as the

17 year old, which Gunnar mentioned. It has a distinct sherry note, vanilla, almond, raisins, plum notes. While my nose did not get any sign of phenol, my mouth did. I can recommend it.

Number 4 comes in three different casks: Bourbon, Sherry, Port. We had the bourbon and is bottled in cask strength. It is again a very typical Bowmore. It is almost sweet with vanilla, black currant, elder. I can recommend this one too.

Number 5 again very typical Bowmore with notes of many fruits, lightly citric. Taste is slightly phenolic with malt. Not my favorite of the evening.

Number 6 when filled in the glass released a strong waft smoke, greasy bacon and tar. Very distinct taste and nose of Oloroso sherry, sulfur, currants, coal, almonds. I can recommend this one also.

Number 7 is yet another typical Bowmore which has been bottled thirteen years ago. Due to the long bottle-storage, the alcohol has become a little more refined, it lost its edges. It comes with notes of vanilla, sherry, but very well-behaved, restrained, almost flat. Not mine...
