NYC Ardbeg exchange

I splurged and bought a bottle of Ardbeg 17 on Friday night, and I'm sorry to say that I'm not a big fan. It's a great whisky, but I don't like it enough for the price. So if anyone in NYC is interested, I'd love to trade my partially-drunk bottle of Ardbeg 17 for your partially-drunk bottle of Lagavulin 16 or Laphroaig 15. I hope this is assumed, but I never drank directly from the bottle. :) Email directions are below. Thanks, Aaron

I hate to admit it, but the A17 wasn't my cup of tea either... Eventually I vatted it with a splash of Arbeg 10, which really improved the malt... and know my bottle of 17 is finished, I even regret it...

I bought mine in the late 1990's. It had a predominately "white noise" character. Not as smooth as my 10, and much less flavor! Though others have written at various points in time to the newsgroup and praised it highly, so it might be an individual batch thang.

"White noise" is a very apt description. I haven't gotten any offers, so I'm thinking that my little brother might be getting a very nice gift. I went back to good old Bowmore Legend last night and was very happy to do so. I bought the A17 based on a recommendation from this list so I know _someone_ digs it. I am now downgrading my trade to Laphroaig 10, Ardbeg 10, or Talisker 10; partially consumed is fine. Otherwise at the end of the week, my brother gets the A17 for free.

If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay? What stores do you recomend?

People keep trying to tell me that there are great prices on Whisky in NYC, and since I'll be there in late May I've been looking on line. From what I've seen with the exchange to Canadian, prices are close to the same (some higher in NYC some a buck or two less...) as they are here in Ontario (land of the giant government monopoly).

Sorry to hear about your impression of the 17 .. it was my first impression as well ... over time though it has made it into my all-time top five.

I mainly shop at Warehouse Wine & Spirits at 735 Broadway and Astor Place. Definitely the best prices anywhere, and not a bad Scotch selection. I paid $65 for my A17 there not including tax. They have Bowmore 12 for $20 and and Aberlour 10 for maybe 22. Small selection of high-end stuff. Around the corner on Astor and Lafayette is Astor Spirits. They have a nice selection as well, although the prices are not generally as good. More high-end stuff, but they've been terminally out of Lagavulin since the price went up. They also carry a few varieties of Van Winkle's unbelievable whiskies. I've been meaning to check out Park Ave Liquors which is actually on Madison and I think 40th St. Supposedly it has the best selection in the city, but I don't know about the prices. Probably sucky.

The best deal is Laphroaig 10 at the Duty Free shop at the Canadian border. $26 American, but I think you can only buy two.

Thanks for that ... I'll definately have to check out those two stores... FWIW Park Avenue lists the Aberlour 10 for $27, with exchange it works out to be about $1.50 Cdn cheaper than I can get it here.

I'm sure it is ;-) I love them both; when I went to Glenmoragnie last year I got a "doggy pack" of Ardbeg 10 and 17 because I went there by car and it was a very good idea: I had 2 very good drams this night!
