Peat Monster

Stopped by my local shop to replace a drained bottle of Caol Isla (helped make for a very pleasant New Year's, thanks) and my interest was piqued by the Compass Box Peat Monster. This is a vatted malt,

46%ABV, claiming a very high and smoky peat level; around USD40 if I remember correctly. Didn't buy it, but thinking of going back for it.

Comments, oh whiskyphiles?

TIA, Howard

I've had the cask strength version of this blended malt, called simply "Monster," and found it to be incredibly smooth and rich. It's not as peaty/smokey as Ardbeg, Lagavulin or Laphroaig, but if you like Caol Ila, you'll like the Monster. In fact, I believe it is a vatting of Caol Ila and Ardmore. Bottom line - go back and get it!

Bought a bottle recently. It's...interesting. It's not as in-your-face peaty as, say, Ardbeg or Lagavulin, but it's certainly peaty. On top of that it's astonishingly smooth - possibly the smoothest whisky I've tasted.

Worth a try.

Did you ever go back to get it? I'd be interested in your impressions.

I'd have to agree with this.

I was hoping to get back there this weekend, but didn't make it. And next weekend I'll be out of town. Maybe the weekend after. Stay tuned...
