Price of Single Malt

Feb 24, 2009 3 Replies

Had an interesting conversation with a local retailer (US) last week. A couple years ago we spoke and he said small retailers had a hard time getting some of the Single Malts. He said for example he was only "allowed" 4 bottles of Oban a year.

Last week he said the tide is changing and he gets many calls from distributors trying to get him to buy SMS and that they are having a very hard time moving product.

He expects a significant price drop in SMS in the US within 6 months. Makes sense to me ...

cheers

I was told by the liquor control authority here in Ontario (Canada) that many distillers and/or bottlers are discountining single malt shipments to Canada because most of our alcohol is state regulated and we are a very small market and the Asians command more product.

However looking around my local agency store last weekend I saw even more single malts on display including Cardhu 12 year old single which I've never seen offered here before and Glen Garioch 15 year old and Chivas Regal 25 year old. I think the single malt shelf expanded and the premium blendeds shrunk.

So much for Canada being a small market. Maybe the global recession dried up all these wonderful Asian buyers and collectors...

Do you see Laprhroig (sp) on your shelves over there . A Lovely drop IMO

The Henchman you and the United States.

cheers,

Henry
