Ardbeg Supernova

Feb 12, 2009 5 Replies

I managed to bag a bottle of this when they made it (briefly) available to people on their mailing list.

Supernova is Ardbeg's 100ppm peat monster, and first impressions are that it's a stonker. Massively phenolic but smooth with it.

Adding just a hint of water _really_ wakes it up - the change is quite astonishing. It goes from something that's just a little flat to something that sparkles. Wonderful.

Bottled at cask strength (can't remember exactly but 58%-ish) and non-chill filtered.

Should go on general sale sometime in May.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll certainly be looking for it.

cheers.

According to the Ardbeg-Website-shop, it's already sold out. It went on sale in January.

Yes - it went on sale for a single day in late Jan and sold out in about

3hrs. However, it will go on general sale in May. I don't know what outlets however.

Jim

Looks like the January release was very limited and a broader release is coming in May. From the Ardbeg web site:

And for those who missed out, all is not lost! Ardbeg Supernova, peated to an astonishing level of over 100 parts per million, will return to earth in a wider, though still limited, release in May 2009. Watch this spaceŠ.!

I got a bottle via the committee and I am afraid I didnt like it. Its peat for peat's sake if you will pardon the pun. Too much of a good thing or maybe I am just too Calvanistic:-)

My wife and myself are going to Islay end of May for the whisky and music festival. We have rented a wee cottage in Port Charlotte. Really looking forward to going to all the destilleries we can get to. I especially look forward to Bruichladdich. Now these guys are really doing special things with Islay whisky.

Peace,

Jock
