Try this;

1 a : of, relating to, or having the characteristics of a phenol b : containing or derived from a phenol

and Phenol:

1 : a corrosive poisonous crystalline acidic compound C6H5OH present in coal tar and wood tar that in dilute solution is used as a disinfectant 2 : any of various acidic compounds analogous to phenol and regarded as hydroxyl derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons

Now if that helps please let me know becasue I have no idea what that taste like either!!

There is, or used to be a cough drop in the US which has strong phenol flavor. It's the brand that comes in drop or spray, you spray it on the back of your throat to numb it, can't remember the name. Chloroseptic maybe?

That said, I've never tasted anything like phenol in laphroaig, but I haven't been looking for it there either.

The compunds that gives Laphroaig its smoky flavour comes from phenols. The phenols also gives drinkers other associations like iodine (medicinial) etc. tar, ashtray whatever you say. All these are refered to as phenolic (or peaty but thats a bad description since its not peat but smoked peat or the smoke from burned peat)

MacDeffe

(We can find the iodine charatcer of whiskies, but is the iodine the compund actual present ?)
