Single Malt vs Other Glasses

Wow. I just read all of July's debate on glasses...heavy tumblers? I guess it's a step up from drinking straight from the bottle in a paper bag next to a trash dumpster.

I, OTOH, understand the legitimacy of fine stemware, and have a specific question: is a single malt glass superior to, say, a cognac glass (not a brandy snifter)? I have a very nice Spiegelau cognac glass, and have been using it for whisky since I recently began drinking scotch. It seems appropriate (noticeably better than a wine glass, for instance), but if a single malt glass would be better, I'll make the investment. Thanks.

The best glass is the one you like most. So if you are fine with the cognac glass just kepp it. Ist's something different if you wanna do a tasting.

I too have a set of Spiegelau cognac-glasses that I regularaly use for tasting and nosing whiskies. But when it comes to drinking whisky I tend to prefer the Glencairn-type glass (I collect glasses from the distilleries I visit).

I always get a good laugh thinking about the rough and tumble highlanders running around the mountains, fighting the English, and then going back home and drinking whisky out of stemware.

The best single malt glass, in my opinion, is the one from Riedel, see

I have both Riedels, as well as the tasting glass, and find that they don't do anything special for whisky.

I prefer the INAO tasting glasses, or the two styles of stemless whisky glasses sold by Malt Advocate and on eBay (etched with various distillery logos). Thes focus the nose perfectly.

When I'm feeling snobbish and drinking something really special, though, like the 30-yr. Macallan from our wedding last year, I reach for the only Waterford snifter I've been able to afford in the only Waterford pattern I can stand (Lismore). 8;)

I wouldn't make it too difficult on myself John. There are lots of companies that develop a "perfect" single malt whisky glass and all of them have in common that they sell expensive glasses! The perfect glass for single malt whisky does not exist. The drink itself gives a few demands to the glass. It shouldn't be too large because whisky is a strong liquer. The "nose" is important, so the glass needs a space to hold its scent. So it has to be a glass with an opening smaller than the lower part. The color of the whisky is important so the glass itself has to be clear and completely transparant. Standard-glasses that are very suitable for single malt whisky are e.g. traditional cognac-glasses and traditional Scottish blenders-glasses, but also a traditional sherry-glass or port-glass is very suitable! Next to these demands, you might have a few of yourself..... If you combine them... you'll may find the perfect whisky-glass ...... for you!

Is Macallan Elegancia available in the United States?

I bought a liter of it on a trip to Britain at the duty-free shop and it turned out to be the BEST stuff that my father likes -- he's 82, loves his single-malt every day.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find it in a domestic liquor shop. The only place I've seen it is in a duty-free shop here (at an airport, and they had no way to sell it to me even if I paid the tax -- our airport duty-frees do not have "Anyone Can Buy").....

anyone know? Particularly in the Boston area?

Thanks

Different strokes -- I bought mine in person at Maison du Whisky, and got the large ones because I drink my whisky neat. 8;)

I think it offers more useful volume for the vapors to collect.

The low center of gravity is nice, but the unavoidable disply of fingerprints is not so nice.

Thanks for the response.

It has excellent flavor .... and until I travel overseas I cannot get another bottle.

Great stuff, however.
