Stores in Connecticut

Does anyone know of any liquor stores in Connecticut that carry a wide variety of single malts? I live near Waterbury, CT but travel down to lower Fairfield County for work every day. I can get to Hartford and New Haven fairly easily as well. Any help is appreciated.

I've never been to any of these, it's just info from the back of the Malt Advocate, so I can't testify to how good these retailers are, how big their selection is, or how close they are to you.

Ancona's Wines and Liquor Ridgefield

293-544-8958

Nutmeg Liquors Bethel

203-743-4945

West Side Wines and Spirits West Hartford

860-233-1241

Of course, there may be others that don't advertise in the Malt Advocate...

Thanks Bart. I've tried these places. No great shakes. I was hoping someone could recommend a place from personal experience.

variety of single malts?

Isn't it bizarre how extreme the market is for malt whiskies: I go to Milwaukee (state of Wisconsin) and everything is $10 cheaper per bottle (at the good places) than 70 miles away in Madison where I live--although in Madison there are some GREAT suppliers, with a wide range of whiskies, and also some GREAT discounters, with immense varieties of beer and wine at terrific prices. And now a new, gorgeous, fabulous place has just opened up a few blocks from where I live--and the prices are an absolute joke--I can't believe that they will ever sell a bottle of single malt unless it is somebody's golden anniversary and they don't know any better.

I can drive to Chicago, and the selection at Sam's and Binny's is terrific--but half the time their prices are higher than in Milwaukee. Then I fly to Florida, and there are few malts to be had, and they are at astronomical prices. You can go to some liquor stores and laugh like a hyena at what they are charging for a simple Macallan 12.

Then you fly to the U.K, where the stuff is MADE, and the prices are outrageous, even at "duty-free" shoppes, but you hop over to Amsterdam or Hamburg, and the duty-free shops, as well as some terrific individual retailers, have dreamworthy selections at good prices.

I was in Vienna at a boutiquey type place near St. Stephan's with a fantastic malt collection, and I was laughing at the prices, they were so ridiculous, when along comes another customer amazed at how great the prices are. I tell him that I see prices FAR lower all the time, and he says that maybe in New York they are that low, but that these prices are GREAT, and I just have to shake my head.

Viva la difference!

He wasn't mocking you, unless you were from Naugatuck or Oakville, in which case you would deserve it. Especially Naugatuck. :-P

Down on the shore you have the high prices from all the city folks. The only place I know of that has a good selection is way over in R.I., where I head to about twice a year.

It's only a bit shorter drive for me, as I take 9 down to Old Saybrook the 95 over to RI.

Although I drive through Naugatuck daily, I'm happy to say I live in Cheshire. I don't mind paying more for a bottle if it can be found conveniently, but I guess there just aren't any great places here in CT. I'll just keep ordering over the 'net I guess, until I drive up to Boston for work. Thanks!
