2020 strikes again :(

With tonight's dinner of roast duck with shi'itakes and shallots and baked sweet potatoes, I chose to open from the cellar a bottle of the

2010 Robert Chevillon Nuits St. George "Vieilles Vignes" only to discover that it was badly corked. But, never fear! Back down to the cellar for the other bottle of the same wine, open it up only to get -- again! -- the unmistakable odor of moldy cardboard. Yes, both bottles were corked. Checking my Cellartracker notes, I find that the two bottles weren't even purchased from the same source.

Can it be 2021 yet?? Mark Lipton

That is really weird. Have never gotten two corked bottles from the same producer much less two bought from different sources.

Sheesh, that stinks. I've managed to avoid that bugaboo, but we still have a week and a half till New Years!

Dan-O (Note to self: Don't open a new bottle until 1/1/21)

Zoom tasting last week of Rothschild Chilean, Argentine, and lower end French wines, organised by Rothschild-run Waddesdon estate, 20 households, 5 wines delivered to each, but I think not all were opened by everyone, so say about 70-80 open: 1 white and 1 red of the Chilean were corked (yes, we asked why they are still using corks: they think consumers like them). They didn't seem surprised at the 3% rate (and delivered substitutes within 3 days). Not as tragic as your Nuits St George as they were easily replaced inexpensive wines, but annoying and worrying. (And I know some members of our group are fortunate enough not to be as sensitive, so there may have been more.)

Just one small point, Sheila, corking can occur even with screwcaps and other closures. The term corking to me is a misnomer.

Yes, systemic contamination happens, but rarer and not random. Last night 2 of 8 participants had corked bottles of a 70s Listrac.

Mark, that really sucks, should have been great (young) wines.

Everything just has to be better in 2021.
