Almost OT: Suggestions on a wine-y weekend trip from London

Hi,

If memory serves, the Tate Modern Gallery has a restaurant with a very nice wine list at more than fair prices. Have a look at their website because menus and wines were online last time I checked.

I even think that their wine list was awarded "Best Wine List" in London a couple of years ago by a known magazine.

You're right, Santiago, but since TB asked for places in the countryside, I think that the Tate Modern won't do. However, when they _are_ in London...

One possible spot would be Raymond Blanc's Manoir aux Quat'Saisons in Oxfordshire

It's not cheap, and I don't know about public transit options, but I suspect that they could get there by British Rail and cab.

LOL!! Yup, showing my age, ain't I? Of course, I cannot utter the phrase without thinking of John Cleese's line from the Python's Dead Parrot sketch: "Well, that's British Rail for you" FWIW, I also have to catch myself from referring to BOAC.

Gosh, BOAC, I remember seeing Vickers VC-10s marked BOAC, they seemed so exotic as I boarded my BEA Comet... I was 6, and a plane nut...

Either way you have to wait a long time. Or move to France, where we may have lots of other problems, but those two work like clockwork... ;-)

One of the hotels in Southwold owned by Adnams (Crown and Swan)? reasonable meals, excellent wine, but I haven't stayed there.

16) Caramel Room of the Berkeley Hotel for afternoon tea. They have some very creative pastry as well as the usual tea foods.

El Vino's in Fleet Street is a good traditional wine bar much beloved of barristers and journalists and may be just what you are looking for on that front.
