Alternative to Von Hovel spatlese?

Where are you? Zimbabwe? Japan? Finland? Your description of this wine was very much to the point, but you didn't say what year or vineyard (if any). Germany is on the edge of the wine-making world and so the vintage differences may be quite large. The vineyards of von Hövel are in the Saar area, just about the coolest vine growing area of Germany and you would expect these wines to show a great deal of acidity, wonderfully balanced in warm years. (2001-2003 should all be very good). Other top notch Saar growers would be van Volxem, Egon Müller (Scharzhof), and von Othegraven. Geltz-Zilliken used to be very good, go for 2002, but

I recently tried the Muller-Catoir Haardter (sp?) Herrenletten 2001 spatelese for Thanksgiving and was so impressed I bought another the next day. I also bought a 2003 Haardter Burgurgarten kabinett, but the prices are nearly double for '03 than '01- damn our weak US dollar! I've been a little disappointed in Zilliken '02 and '03, not bad but not great either.

I'm in the US (the north east if that makes any difference) and yes, it was a 2002. I thought Von Hovel was the vineyard, I'll check the bottle the next time I have some.

Of course, people living in Scandinavia, like me, or in Austria or France will have no idea of local availability. Now, you might get answers from those acquainted with your area :-) Anders
