Best Pinot Noir within $40 revisited

Our wine club meeting was last Saturday. Sorry about the delay on posting the results but this is the season of catering and I've been incredibly busy. (Yea!) We took Mark Lipton's advice and got something from Cote d' Or. Here are the results:

  1. We brought a Jerome Chezeraux Nuits St. George 2003 which turned out to be the favorite. It was big and full bodied, full fruit with blackberry notes. .99

  1. David Bruce Sonoma Pinot Noir 2004 full bodied with a lot of fruit, velvety, went well with chocolate.

  2. Lily Sonoma Pinot Noir 2005 Full bodied, cherry notes, quite dry, went well with savory foods.

4 Beringer Founders Estate 2005 Full fruit, lighter bodied, velvety. $15.95

  1. Nicolas Potel Bourgogne 2003 Licorice notes and a bit of noble rot.

  1. Domaine Drohin Willamette Valley 2003 We didn't really like this wine. It was very astringent and too peppery. .

  2. The Ringer(similar but not the grape we're focusing on) Chateau de la Chauzie 2004 Beaujolais. Not great, barely OK for a Beaujolais. .99

  1. Trinity Oaks Pinot Noir 2005 Yuck! Harsh, bad wedding wine.

Thanks for the report. I'm not surprised by the good showing of the David Bruce, as his Pinots have for some years been QPR favorites in our household. I am a bit surprised to see the Domaine Drouhin finish so low, but of course I don't know the tastes of your group. From the desciption, though, I wonder if it might have had low level cork taint, as astringent is not a word I would commonly associate with DDO's Pinots. I have a bottle of the '03, so I'll report back when we open it (it won't be soon, alas).

Mark, I'm not sure what was wrong with our bottle of Domaine Drophin, but it definitely was off somehow. It seemed acidic and a little sour. Maybe you're right, perhaps it had a bit of cork taint. The author of the book we use named The Wine Club, Maureen Petrosky we sometimes see as a judge on the show Iron Chef America.
