I will be taking a river cruise July 9th from Budapest. I have a feeling that I will want to buy wine in town and pay the corkage so I would be looking for a place in the center of Budapest (not sure where the ships tie up) or similar location in Vienna (be in Vienna on Tuesday).

I think ships tie up between the Chain bridge and Elisabeth Bridge
There's an excellent wine shop called Bortarsasag in Batthyany utca, in Buda which is set a little back from the river side not too far north of the Chain bridge (Szechenyi). There's a Batthyany Metro station on the river. Can you read _any_ hungarian as they've got a website!!

When we were there, we found a shop in Vaci Utca that had an interesting selection. Vaci utca id the tourist centre and is pedestrianised. It's parallel to the river and not for from it in Pest between the bridges.

Ian you found it! Thak you. Just after I posted we got our "tickets" and they clearly spelled out the location that you came up with. So I guess the next question is should I get "Bulls Blood?" (If so what can I expect?)
If now was before 1989, I'd say get it. In 2006, I'd say don't. Unless Ian has some inside information about different producers of Egri Bikaver, and says which ones are good. In your place, I'd be looking for dry furmints. Actually, if you are still in Jacksonville, you can buy an export version of Egri Bikaver at the local Total Wine store and try it. (Apologies if you already knew that).
I'm no expert, but the Egri Bikaver that I've had was nothing special at all. As Elko says, there may be some exceptional stuff that I haven't seen, but that's my take. Instead, if you have any fondness for dessert wines you should seek out some Tokaji. Again, my knowledge is scant compared to that of Ian, Michael or Mike, but I'd be hunting down some Tokaji Aszu 6 putts from the likes of Istvan Szepsy (which might very well be nigh unto impossible to find in Buda for all I know).

Well I am looking more for a good couple of bottles for immediate comsumption. I tend to like Burgundies, St. Emilion and Rhone, for whites, I am pretty open as long as the natural fruit comes through.
From the banks of the Danube take subway line U1 to Stephansplatz. Then you're right in the center of Vienna with everything I mentioned on the Parker Forum within walking distance.
Btw, Meinl am Graben has a wine shop in the basement. Not the cheapest in town, but with knowlegdeable people and an excellent choice of top producers.
