Canadian Ice Wines: recos?

A friend of mine is in Toronto this weekend and wandered into one of the state liquor stores. He has had Inniskillin Ice Wine and called me for a recommendation for other producers that might be worth trying.

I haven't a clue! Is anyone familiar enough with the producers to make a recommendation?

Thanks

Ken K

Gewurztraminer by Martin Malivoire, I simply loved it.

In general I'd avoid the Vidal icewines. Either Gewurztraminer or Riesling would be my preference. There are also some Cab Franc icewines around these days if you want to try something different.

You can check the catalog (and store stock) at

I found more Riesling icewines (16) than Gewurztraminer (3) by doing a search on "Riesling icewine" and "Gewurztraminer icewine". By far the bulk of the icewines are Vidal (53).

Thirty Bench has a couple Riesling icewines listed. I've tried several of their Rieslings (icewine, late harvest, and dry) and they've always impressed.

Another favourite is Cave Spring Indian Summer Riesling (Late Harvest). It's about 1/2 the price of icewine, and is a great value. It appears to be in stock in a lot of locations.

The real trick is for your friend to find a good LCBO store with a large Vintages section. If they are downtown Toronto, they could try to go to the Queen's Quay (pronounced "key") store. Take Yonge St. south to the lake, 1-2 blocks east.

The wine consultants are mostly very knowledgable, and if he/she can find one who's not busy, they tend to like to talk. And they don't get paid commission (they're almost civil servants) so they don't try to talk to things you don't want.

It's not in the LCBO or Vintages listing, nor is it on Malivoire's website

so it's probably not available.

The closest they've got is "2003 Riesling Icewine VQA" at $CA36 for

200ml, but the LCBO only shows stock in 2 stores, neither in Toronto.

The original poster could get this if "the friend who is visiting" has a friend here. It's possible to order from the winery and have it delivered to somebody's house. But they can only deliver to an address inside Ontario. Otherwise it's a 90 minute drive from Toronto (assuming you avoid rush hour) to Malivoire.

For reference, right one Canadian buck will get you 81 cents US.
