Get ready for wine In milk/juice-type cartons in UK, Canada, US

I just received the January 06 Decanter, and found a very interesting news story on p.7. Boisset is about to sell quality wine (well at least better than typical US large-container box wine) in the UK in Tetra-Pak. This is a cardboard-plastic package such as used to sell milk and juice in many countries. Also, Canada is to be included. Boisset says the quality of the wine is protected and the weight is light. US wine buyers should not feel left out, because Constellation plans to launch a range of California wines in the same type of pack.

A color picture is shown of 3 Tetra-Pak wines. The brand name is French Rabbit. They are Cabernet, Merlot, and Chardonnay in the 2004 vintage with 12-13% alcohol. The boxes are chrome yellow with the label areas in very contrasting purple, green, or deep pink, depending on the wine. Hopping rabbits are shown just above the label area. All are Vin de Pays d'Oc.

Three Thieves Bandit is already rather ubiquitous, at least in New England. The original offering, Trebbiano, doesn't seem to be available any more.

I'm hot a huge fan of the tetra pack, honestly. Being a single guy who has 1 glass per night with dinner, it seems that 1L is too large of a package, given that it lacks an oxygen-impermeable bladdar. A 750 can last me 4 days, though sometimes that 4th day is questionable.

Nothing wrong with the idea itself, but it seems to have limited utility. I can see why it works in certain parts of Europe, where an entire family will consume some wine each night, every night. I doubt that it will be of much interest to most American wine consumers.

And perhaps I'm wrong.

In Ontario the LCBO launched these products about 6 months ago. The same wines are available in traditional glass bottles too, for the same price as the tetra pak. But the tetra paks are 1L, and the bottles are 750ml.

I haven't tried them. They got some press when they were first introduced, but I haven't heard anything recently.

For reference the $12.95 price is about US$11.25 at today's exchange rate, and all taxes are included.

I saw some 750 pinot grigio and syrah (not in the same box) the other day was a bit amused as it looks like the same container in which we buy chicken stock. My wine guy said it isn't bad, but then we got into a discussion of Pinot Grigio in general and how it was not bad unless one bought Sta Margherita and then one had to wonder how much too much money one could have.
