Might add that one of my first really nice wines was in Sydney during R and R I ate a nicer restaurant in King's Cross- no comments please. I had a cabernet S from some valley (back in 71) I recall the wine being almost better thant the steak!
Hunter valley winemakers can make great reds; But not from Hunter Valler grapes! (The honest ones will tell you that themselves!)
Suggestions; Go to Rosemount and taste the premium labels (Leave the 'diamond' labels for when you get home.) Then go to Tempus Two and taste the best!
I see from your website that you think we speak English here. We don't speak English any more than you Yanks do. We speak Strine, for Chrissake! Best of luck with your visit. Pity you can't take a little side trip to Victoria to taste some great Pinot Noir (from our South) and fabulous Shiraz (from our North East) martinatweldingautomationdotcomdotau
So near, yet so far - have a great trip to Oz; just keep NZ on your "to do" list.
As coincidence would have it, in '71 I was living, working and studying in Sydney, living in Potts Points (suburb adjoining Kings Cross). I used to suppliment my meagre earnings by playing pool, against US R&R visitors from Viet Nam (all too many thought that they were Minnesota Fats!!!). They could never come to grips with playing pool on a full sized snooker table !!!

Most assuredly your lordship, NZ is never far from my mind I watched way too much Xena Warrior Princess for that!
So you were the guy . . . but I didn't play pool so I guess you weren't afer all. I absolutely loved Sydney, have never been treated so well in all my life nor had so much fun but my favorite exchange was the first night as I walked up the street to get some tobacco and this young lady (absolutely stunning to my mind) steps out of the shadows by the Bank of New South Wales and says " You want a girl?" to which I replied "sure" and just kind of stood there. she looked at me and said "You didn't expect to get for bloody free did you?" I replied, "You asked." Needless to say I was persona non grata on the street for the rest of the week.
Lately I've been impressed by the Meerea Park Shiraz Viognier, and I saw a large paper rate one of their other wines quite well. There is a review here:

Be aware that there has been a huge expansion of resort-style wineries in the region over the past ten years. Many of those wines would come from young vines.
I believe you are the 3rd person in the last 12 months to request this info, and I know there has been a myriad of suggestions to the previous requests. Google may help..:>)
I know it's close to Sydney, but I hope visitors do not leave assuming it is representative of all Oz wines...:>)
Semillon is what the HV does best. Tyrells, Brokenwood, McWilliams (Lovedale), Tulloch, Chain of Ponds, and a host of small family owned wineries do this varietal so well, and are usually keen to show the traveller how well they age, so back vintages are normally on hand...:>)
HV Shiraz is often derided, but through a host of roughish reds, rise some absolute rippers. Brokenwood have "The Graveyard" Shiraz which is an iconic drop, Tyrells have a range thast crosses all price points, and you may want to check out a rising star from HV in "Capercaille" in the Lower Hunter region. Rhone styles are NOT part of the HV make-up, moreso, big, in your face shiraz styles.

Rest assured Tourism Australia picked the Hunter for the conference not I.
This is what I will seek though I am sure that Shiraz will be provided!
Never meant to imply that Rhone styles were all I drank, just my preference just as I prefer white Burgundy to other styles of Chardonnay, never the less, I have been known to drink an occassional other style.
