New poster

Hello, may I introduce myself? I have lurked here for a few weeks, I am Judith and I live in England, Norwich which is in the East, about

45 minutes North of Cambridge and 2 hours from London.

I notice that most of the posters are men and I hope that I am not trespassing on a male domain, if I am, just say.

I love wine but I have a very narrow palate restricted to white wine. My husband, Edward, is devoted to Red wine and his particular love is French Burgundy.

We have a very small cellar and we buy young wine and lay it down for several years.

I very much look foward to reading your views on wine and hopefully sharing mine with you.

Welcome to alt.food.wine, Judith. You are right when you observe that it's mostly men (as far as we can tell) posting here, but alas that seems to be true of all the Internet wine forums I've seen -- there seems to be something about the confluence of computers, wine and obsession that appeals particularly to male psyche ;-) However, I also do hope that you haven't encountered any misogynism here. There are a few less-than-perfectly-civil people who post here, but AFAIK that hostility isn't directed toward women in particular; if you have felt otherwise, please accept my apology on behalf of the newsgroup.

Your tastes in wine sound similar to those of several people who regularly post here, including myself. I hope that you'll find this newsgroup a welcoming and informative place.

Judith,

Welcome. You are, in no way, "trespassing on a male domain." There have been ladies, who have frequented this NG, from time to time. I do not recall any in the very recent past, however. I can only hope that this NG was never preceived as being too male-centric for any of them, and can only assume that they became too busy elsewhere in their lives to post much. The same happens to most of us, from time, to time.

Thanks for popping in and introducing yourself. I hope that you enjoy the NG and can find some useful and interesting material here.

Hello Judith, and welcome. I think you will find that AFW is (in spite of a few hiccups) one of the most courteous and civilized corners of the net.

If I'm not mistaken, I recognize you from urg. Let me just say that things are much calmer here...

Do I remember correctly that you spend some time at a place in the massif central? Perhaps you can tell us about what sort of wines you find locally there.

Many of us here buy young wine to lay down, and your and Edward's recommendations are very welcome.

I hope you will enjoy AFW. We do have female members, though fewer than there ought be, and I for one look forward to you contributions.

Oh Goodness, thank you, all of you, what a warm welcome.

Yes, I do post to a gardening group and I expect that's where Emery's has heard of my name.

You are quite right, even though I live in England, we do have an old farmhouse in the Massif Central in France. My husband worked and lived in France at one time.

My taste is so narrow when it comes to white wine. At one time I liked Gerwurtz (can't spell it) traminer but my taste evolved and then I liked, very much, New Zealand, Jackson Estate, Sauvingnon Blanc. I used to drink Cloudy Bay, Sauvignon Blanc, not the Chardonnay, but found it became the "in" drink and it outpriced itself in restaurants.

As we speak, I have a glass of S. Blanc at my left elbow, it is a French one, an Appelation Controlle but nothing outstanding, just a pleasant wine.

I think I've told you enough for now and hopefully without boring you, as time goes on, I can tell you about Edward's taste in wine and my taste regarding pudding wines.

I have to say, you seem a lovely group, I have lurked for a while before I jumped in and it seems to be civil and also very well read.

Kind regards - Judith

I think many of us, also fans of Cloudy Bay SB, have had a similar experience. An excellent wine but now too dear.

Have you tried Isabel? I learned here, from His Lordship St. Helier (an antipodean epicure and contributor) that they used to sell grapes to Cloudy Bay prior to concentrating on their own estate bottling. Not sure how the price has tracked, as it is unavailable here in France AFAIK. But of similar quality to Cloudy Bay (or used to be).

Perhaps you have explored the SBs from Menetou-Salon? Still some good bargains to be had, I believe.

cheers,

And still is Emery !

And may I also extend an antipodean welcome, Judith.

And I will echo other sentiments made - this is, by and large, an excellent forum, made up primarily of those damned ex-colonials from across the Atlantic - but with a fair representation of knowledgable contribultors from Europe; Australia; New Zealand; Singapore and elsewhere.

I spent spent several months based out of East Anglia; Wymondham actually - (frequenting such places as the Green Dragon and the Crossed Keys) where I developed (because of the lack of availability of Cloudy Bay or any other Marlborough Sauvignon!) - a taste for a beautiful, black, brew called "Woodfordes Norfolk Nog".

No I haven't but I will!!

I don't know of SB from Menetou-Salon but the name has now gone down in my little book to try.

I will be off line for a couple of weeks as we are off to Guadeloupe and Martinique do you know any BB there?

Oh thank your Lordship Darling.

I have to admit from the outset that I am not knowledgable about wine, you would soon suss me out if I pretended to be. I just like certain wines, that's all.

Wymondham, 5 miles fom me, it's a market town, not too much going for it in the way of haute cusine or wine suppliers with the exception of a great restaurant, Number 24. The food is exceptional but the wine does not live up to expectation in that I can find an SB which will suit me but my husband cannot find a good red, they are all too young to drink.

You are obviously talking about Woodfordes' ale, as I have never drank beer in my life, I can't comment on that!!!

Real name or nom de plume? My real name is Judith Charlotte.

Oh goodness me, it is such bad form to reply on the back of my own post. I meant SB not BB as in bed and breakfast!!! .

You are very close - it's Gewurztraminer, one of my favorite whites. To be completely correct, I would add two dots over the "u".

The only S Blanc's I don't care for are Spanish Rueda. But your mileage may vary.

White wines are generally not for laying down. There are exceptions, of course.
