Hello, people
I am looking for a port that is like Graham's Six Grapes, but with an even more "fruit forward" taste, crisp, strong flavor, etc. If it were a little sweeter, that would be OK too. I suppose it would be a Ruby port. I know there are a bunch of inexpensive rubies, probably because they require less time in the barrel. Also, I hope it will be $15 per bottle or less. Should I look into Californian ports? I tried one by Blackstone, and that was pretty good. Anyway, I already have a few tawnies, so I don't want to go in that direction, i.e. mellow, woody, etc. I plan to drink this after dinner. Would a colder serving temperature bring out the crispness? Thanks
Here are the ports I have tried:
Porto Pocas 10 yr Tawny: The "tawniest" of the ports I have tried, with a moderately strong taste and longest aftertaste. I would describe the aftertaste like Chinese red bean dessert. I'm not sophisticated enough to say all the non-wine things that this wine tastes like.
whiskers Blake: Slightly sweeter and weaker than the above, less aftertaste.
Broadbent 3 year? Madeira: Slightly sweeter yet, even less aftertaste. I'm kind of surprised something this young is already brownish and tawny-ish.
RL Buller Muscat: My favorite. Most complex, with the strongest non-wine-like tastes, e.g. dried apricot, various sugary, brown things like toffee, etc. If it were a little less sweet it would be really awesome. Has a bit of that tawny taste also.
Graham's Six Grapes: Reminds me of dark red wines, although I know very little about them. Has that dark red color, which I associate with fruit flavor, instead of that brownish, woody, mellow tawny flavor. Slightly sweet, which I like.
Blackstone: I don't own this one, so I don't remember well, but I think it was a little stronger tasting than the Graham's. I probably also wish it were a little sweeter.
