I have also tried the Raymound Roure 1997, which was pleasing, and with come character, but only OK. It was starting to seem a bit thin, which may well be the vintage as much as the wine. Ironically enough, I bought it from a merchant who thought the HAD sold me Thalabert, as the box had been mislabelled on entering the cellar. They refunded me £1.20 per bottle (what's that? nearly $2?) as it was only RR - so in the UK it is seen as a sub-thalabert range



I agree with Dale - stick to the Thalabert.

OK - I decided to open the bottle. What a pleasant surprise: Plenty of new oak, but they didn't overdo it. Hints of mint and chocolate and a touch of Saint-Julien-like citric acid - in a blind tasting I could even have mistaken this wine for a Branaire-Ducru. A very good effort, although it is somewhat light in color and already shows a ripe finish. I really like it - its style being closer to Les Cèdres than to anything else bearing the Jaboulet label. In the long run I might still prefer the Gigondas Pierre Aiguille from the same year (1999), if only for the much more attractive price (about $15 less).

I must admit that I don't get it - a lot of my friends do like the P45, but side by side with Jaboulet's similarly priced Côtes du Ventoux "Les Traverses" the latter has been preferred more than once. I have never had both wines from the same vintage though which probably isn't fair. Interestingly, I found the 2001 P45 to be the best I have ever tasted, but it still was a toss-up between this one and the '98 Les Traverses we had been served only minutes before (@ a recent Jaboulet tasting in Cologne, Germany hosted by M. Jaboulet himself).
