Re: Question re 2K Bdx in US

So, can you expand on your experiences ? When you say no one is buying 2000

Here in the San Francisco Bay Area demand for 2000 Bordeaux is huge. Costco's around here have been getting decent allocations of the usual suspects, and even the the inflated (but *relatively* inexpensive) prices they are selling like hot cakes, usually within hours. This applies for the 1st growths priced $250-$275 as much as the lower end stuff priced $20-$50. The only one I have seen languishing is the 2k Mouton priced at $280, which hung around for about 3 or 4 weeks before selling out.

Salut/Hi Tom S,

QUITE right. Especially when the vintage is uneven. Too many chateaux decided to cash in on the "year of the millenium" and when rain didn't come by mid september, picked anyway, with grapes lacking physiological maturity (green pepper taste).

Exactly. Fortunately at least in the case of many Bordeaux the market has calmed down again, and some 2002s are going to offer better vfm.

I just got back from Yakima, WA, Dale, so just saw your posting today. I wish I were not buying blind sometimes, especially Barolo and Brunello, which I relied on WS comments and guessing. But Brown Derby just put some Burgundies on sale, including 93 Beaune Montremenots (Mussy), and I have had this wine, and it's good (read -a subtle fragrant Burgundy without a heavy-handed oak treatment). So I ordered some. Sometimes one lucks out.

But we got to taste a lot of the Yakima Valley wineries last week, and then got to buy some (2 cases). So teaching in an obscure place, and having time to take bike trips of wine regions is some compensation for not living in a large urban area.

I'm still not impressed with the WA Rieslings sampled, but several of the Chardonnays we tasted were a pleasant surprise.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I sometimes think I'm buying in the dark.

I looked at Albertsons in Jackson, WY last week, and only two lesser 2000 Bordeaux in the $13-$20 range. Sorry, I forgot to record the names. They seem to be sitting on a lot of 98 and 99 Bordeaux. Maybe with tourism down, the big named bottles haven't been moving much.

At least they fixed their AC now, and they are no longer cooking their wines in their ritzy wine loft.

I suspect the small states never got much of an allocation of 2000 Bordeaux, even for the ski areas.
