I'm going to be in San Francisco in mid-August, and though I may not have a lot of time for beer, I'd like some ideas about what I may be able to find, if I DO find the time (most likely just a few hours on Saturday night).
Basically, I'll be in Burlingame (near SFO airport), so I'm curious to know about good brewpubs, bars and even liquor stores, either in Burlingame/near the Hyatt airport hotel, and/or easily reachable by BART (since I won't likely have access to a car).
Interestingly, when I was at SFO last month, they were constructing an Anchor pub that was supposed to be done by now. I think it was at Terminal 3 (former North Terminal). Might be worth a look if you've got some Airport time to kill.
In Burlingame:

Good pub food (albiet with California prices), good atmosphere, beer generally good, rarely great. Not all that close to the airport hotels; you'd probably need to get a cab.
Within spitting distance from the Embarcadero or Montgomery BART stations in SF you've got Gordon Biersch, Thirsty Bear

and 21st Amendment

All decent but nothing to write home about. Gordon Biersch has a spectacular Bay view, Thirsty Bear has good tapas, 21st Amendment probably has the best beer.
A bit of a hike from the Civic Center BART station, but worth that hike, you've got Toronado

-- bar only, but what a bar), Suppenkueche

-- good German restaurant with excellent beer), and Magnolia, a pretty good brewpub down the street from Toronado

If you don't mind a less delicate clientele and neighborhood, Zeitgeist is close to the 16th & Mission BART station
You gotta hit a Beverages & More store (BevMo) for their vast beer selection. Should be able to get to a SF store by Bart and cab. Hope you have one of those luggage-on-a-dolly things you can free up. You'll need it. I highly recommend Drakes IPA.
I really wanted to do this, but it turns out the hotel I was staying at follows some "corkerage" law the says you can't bring beer (etc) into the hotel without paying a fee, and at a mighty $2 per bottle, I didn't want to risk it.

A sign still said "Coming Soon", so I didn't even bother to walk down that way. I was kind of hoping to hit it on my way out, but no go.
I have to admit that the beer wasn't GREAT (FG), but the sampler did hit the spot, the porter and imperial stout being my favorites (the IPAs were pretty good too). I love the building/atmosphere, not to mention the delightful waitress, and the meatloaf I had was very tasty.
Luckily I was going out with somebody with a car, but it was a pretty easy drive from the Hyatt, where I was staying. Though it would have been a bit of a walk, it was close enough that it would have been good exercise if one had the time.

If I'd had more time for some more good beer, I'd pretty much decided on Magnolia and Toronado, and/or Beach Chalet. Oh well, hopefully I'll get to San Francisco again "soon" and hit them.
