recent burgundy trip

So Bi!! I did have the Bresse Chicken at La Cote St. Jacques, unfortunately I left my lactase pills on my tray on the airplane so I was not eating anyting remotely milky that week. They did prepare some lovelyvegetables for me and I did try a drip of the sauce, delicious I want more now!

It was an interesting week food wise as it was a lot of fish and when we finally got roast pintade (mine came with roast potatoes thanks to the no milk rule) I was ready for somehting of substance.

Wines for the week were largely village level. One night we had the 07 Pernand Vergelesses both blanc and rouge at La Charlemagne a fusion restaurant with 1 star outside of Beaune (in of all places, Pernand Vergelesses) both were among the best of the week, simple wines ready now to drink, but enjoyable.

Best tasted was a 2001 Vosne Romanee that was still a bit green but opened nicely after a bit-bus was leaving cellar guy was ready to pour me more :-(

The most aggravating thing was not being able to buy anything to take home as I was going with carry on only.

Weirdest wine experience ofthe week Charles De Gualle duty free. Moet Chandon NV for 31.50 euro. Cost at Costco in Jacksonville Fl? 31.50 US (pennies might be off but a 40% savings for buying at home not bad!) Joseph Coulter Joseph Coulter Cruises and Vacations

I always loved the presentation of the chicken....the pot is sealed with bread dough and the chicken is steamed in champagne. Too bad about the pills. FYI, I've found the pharmacies in France to be quite accomodating and it was fairly easy to get prescription medications for non-narcotic drugs. I've even had the hotel conceierge pick up meds for me that I've lost, forgoten or needed for whatever reason.

I have had the same experience except in this case. One can order the product online in France but I tried several parmacies each time getting more attention than a US Pharmacy would give but each time getting a desole! Joseph Coulter Joseph Coulter Cruises and Vacations

Lactase 3500 pills from Solgar are available from their distributors here, in Paris that would be "Rendez-vous de la nature" on rue Mouffetard 96.

Otherwise, they are not so easily found. To be honest, very few people drink milk here, even kids seem to grow up without drinking any. As a result, I suspect a high percentage of southern Europeans would be lactose intolerant (I know many Italians are). Not sure what effect cheese or yogurt has on lactose levels.

There is no appreciable lactose in either cheese or yogurt, which is why lactose intolerants can consume them with no ill effects.

The cheese and yoghurt thing I have known for a while. It gets stares after I pass on cream sauces and then go for the cheese, esp hard cheese, I am leery of the soft ones probably for no good reason other than conditioned response.

Strange I have never had much problem with butter either (but it is yellow! conditioned response is to white things.)

The lactose intolerant subject is especially interesting to me because my son is lactose intolerant. He will order a pizza without cheese (yuk), and stay away from any kind of cheese or other milk products. After searching the web, I discovered that some hard and aged cheeses are very low in lactose. My son is a belligerent fellow who won't take any "drugs" that might help his lactose intolerance, and I'm a "druggie" who will take Zantac, Tumms, or Alka- Seltzer if the need arises.

Those darn (42 year old) kids still have things to learn!

FWIW laxtase is not a "drug" but a naturally occuring enzyme that facilitates the breakdown of the lactose sugar so that it does not ferment in the small intestine -the couse of all that gastric and other distress.

Though I am ery sensitive (mashed potatoes are a real nono) hard cheeses are not a problem, really.

and now back to wine . . .! Joseph Coulter Joseph Coulter Cruises and Vacations
