Scholium Project Riquewihr

It's been a while since I've done much on Usenet, much less a.f.wine, but yesterday Tarri and I went out on an impromptu date to check out a couple of local vineyards that have placed "open" signs on the main road in the last year.

After reading all the buzz around Scholium Project in the last year or so, I was pleasantly surprised to be offered a taste of Scholium Project Riquewihr, a late harvest Gewurztraminer. I did not know exactly what to expect; some reviews of the '08 Riquewihr employ a great deal of hyperbole (for example, see:

) while others are more subtle - see:

.

The reality that I had in my glass was much more like the latter tasting note; identifiable as Gewurz in the nose, though dominated by something more like a floral Orange Muscat, excellent mouth-feel, and long, dry finish that turns granite-minerally. Really, there was nothing flawed or funky-bad, this is a nice wine with layers of complexity. I *liked* it, and so did Tarri; I'm not sure exactly when I'll open it, but I had to have it - even at $30/500ml.

Cheers, Dana

Hey, Dana! Long time, no see. Yes, thos Scholium Project wines are rarely (if ever) boring, are they? I've only had a few and found them all interesting. Like you, I don't know what to do with such wines (and they are rather pricey for experimentation), but I'll never refuse a glass of one if offered it.

I've tasted a few Scholium Project wines and they're just not my cup of tea...or wine as the case may be. I found them to downright wierd. Lot's of off putting oxidized notes in the Chardonnay...more like hard apple cider than chardonnay. The Pinot Grigio was undrinkable for me. It was harsh, hot, tannic and not recognizable as wine...more like Tequila which was how I described it. Admittedly, I haven't had many of their wines but I do know folks, who's palates I trust, who really like the wines.
