I saw bottles marked "Southern Point Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon" at my grocery store (Westminster, Orange County, California, USA) a few days ago on sale for $4 so I got one.
Nose: smells like Chablis, of all things. No cabernet sauvignon odor at all.
Color: deep red
Taste: light astringency, slight sweetness, fruity tartness, berry-like flavors. Like a nice Merlot. No hint whatsoever of any cabernet sauvignon flavors.
Aftertaste: continuing tanin and berries, and a hint of dark chocolate.
What the heck? This was a nice Merlot. So, why was it labeled "Cabernet Sauvignon" since apparently not a single grape of THAT varietal made it into this bottle? A labeling error? Or did someone manage to actually make a wine out of cabernet sauvignon grapes that is like a Merlot instead? Puzzling.
Oh well, not too upset, only out $4, and the wine was not bad... it just wasn't cabernet sauvignon.
