[TN] 2006 Wither Hills SB

Tonight, Jean and I hired a babysitter and took ourselves out to a movie and a light post-theater supper. The movie "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" was OK in an escapist, not-very-historically-accurate costume drama sorta way (which, truth to be told, was what we were looking for, more or less) and I could probably watch Geoffry Rush recite the phone directory and think that it was a stirring performance. Afterward, we decamped to "Windows on the Wabash" for some tapas and a half-priced bottle of white wine so that Jean's lingering cold wouldn't be aggravated by histamines in red wine. Alas, the top floor of WotW was occupied by a boistrous party of sorority grrlz, so we sat in the downstairs and split a bottle of:

2006 Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc nose: floral, tropical fruit palate: light, balanced acidity, citrus, floral, some guava

An interesting contrast to other NZ SBs we've had in recent months, this had little to no "cat piss"/gooseberry flavor and had its emphasis much more on the tropical fruit side of the SB spectrum. It also hid its

13.5% ABV very well. All in all, an excellent reminder of why I first took notice of NZ for SB.

Thanks for notes (movie notes, too). Is this Marlborough or another region? New name to me

Really? I'm surprised you don't know this label already, Dale, though you're a little less enamored of NZ SB than I am IIRC. Anyway, it's Marlborough, I do believe.

Doesn't seem to be widely distributed in this area. Only 1 NY store, Suburban, where I infrequently shop. If I find myself there will check it out. I buy a fair amount of wine from out of state, but seldom much sub-$20, as the shipping far outweighs any tax savings.

very common label in the UK, even get it at our local Tescos, they also do a PN which is OKish from memory.

Nice note, Mark. I'd been exploring a lot of other different styles/ grapes lately and it had been a while since I'd sipped a Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc... but I also had a wonderful reminder last weekend of why I love the stuff so much. A friend poured me a glass of Craggy Range Te Muna Road Vineyard SB 2005 (Martinborough)... amazingly clean, vibrant and elegant. Glorious stuff.

I find the comparison between SB originating from Marlborough on one hand and Martinborough on the other most interesting.

Generally, the former is the quintessentially the grassy "cat's pee on a gooseberry bush" - whilst Martinborough offers a slightly more tropical, passionfruit / pineapple elements.

I have just, last night, opened the 2007 Wither Hills Sauvignon.

I would be as bold as to say that there has been a shift in style between the 06 and 07.

Perhaps it was the difficult start to the vintage (cold November-December 06 reducing fruiting - but excellent conditions leading up to harvest meaning good quality fruit) which has seen a move away from the powerhouse style of the past.

The 2007 wine is a little more subtle - perhaps even more sophisticated, which may confuse fans of what is normally regarded as one of the most full-bodied of all Marlborough Sauvignons.

I sometimes too wonder if winemakers are elevating RS beyond the 'normal' 3 g/l to cater for the 'mass market'.
