TN: a very good night of Gevrey in East Village

Our Bordeaux group veered east (or ENE) to Burgundy. A smaller than usual contingent met at Noreetuh where we were treated very well. Shrimp puffs, hamachi crudo, musubi (including galb i, pork jowl, tuna, scallop, katsuobushi), skewers (dry aged beef, pork, cuttlefish and mushroom), mochiko fried chicken, dry aged steak with broccolini and miso potatoes, and more - I really enjoyed the food as usual.

2006 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Pear and apple, brioche, a little smoke. Big but bright and balanced. A-/B+

Theme was Gevrey 1st and GCs. A bottle of 1996 D. Laurent CSJ was corked, but the Clair backup was one of the wines of the night.

1988 Jadot Chambertin Clos de Beze I didn?t have time to double-decant before leaving, and I regretted as there was fine sediment in solution. Still, a pretty great showing- sweet black cherry and currant, espresso, smoke. Resolved tannins, balanced acids, long finish. A-/B+

1996 Jadot Chambertin Clos de Beze A bit higher acid, black fruits, smoked meat, big. B+

1993 Ponsot Chapelle Chambertin Acids are a little prickly, red fruits and sandalwood, not quite as complete as others, but I still enjoyed. B

2002 Ponsot Chambertin Quite giving, rich red and black cherry fruit, coffee, spice. Long and complex. A-

2000 Bruno Clair Clos St. Jacques Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Black plum and cherry, integrated vanillin oak aromas, resolved tannins, balanced. Excellent length, ready to go. A-

2008 Fourrier ?aux Echezeaux? Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Red fruits, smoke, spicy. Bright acids, yet fairly plush texture. B+/B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
