TN Ch Beychevelle 1975

Beychevelle 75 probably is as good as it ever will be, but it might last a few more years. The harshness typical of many 75's has rounded, and the balance of acid and tannin now is under control. The color still is rather deep with only a slight bit of age showing around the rim. Many of the Beychevelles from the 70s were quite decent, but not among the top wines of that era. The taste of this wine is rather typical Bordeaux, but perhaps a bit generic. I would not pay a large sum for this at a restaurant, but, if you find some that has been stored well on sale at a low cost, it might be worth tasting a bottle to see if you want more. It will not win rave reviews from the critics, but it serves well enough with lamb and other typical red Bordeaux food matches.

I still have fond memories of the 1974 Beychevelle, which at the time was ~$7US. I must have finished off at least a case, and very happily.

When the 1975 came out, I tried a bottle with great expectation that it would be well worth the much higher price. It wasn't. In fact, I liked the

1974 better. :^(

The 1975 Beychevelle was, like many 75s, pretty much untouchable in it's youth.

It can now be most agreeable - a bottle I opened last month was probably the best I've had yet. I agree that it drinks well now, and there is no point in holding as it won't get any better.

That pretty much describes the '75 Mouton.

I wish I could have said the same for the jeroboam of Mouton I opened a couple of years ago. That was a huge disappointment. The wine wasn't spoiled or corked, but it certainly didn't merit First Growth status - and never will IMO.

I've had very good bottles of 1975 Mouton - and not so good as well. Bit variable.
