TN: Marquis de Terme and Trimbach PG

Friday grilled some chicken breast, then topped with basil pesto for last couple of moments . Opened a 2000 Trimbach Pinot Gris "Reserve" (this is the basic $12 bottling, despite Reserve name). Sweet white fruit (pear and apple), a bit of spice. Not especially crisp by Trimbach standards, but a nice light to medium bodied white. Good finish with a hint of wet rocks. B

Saturday I joined Betsy in the city for a matinee, then headed home for dinner (she was playing night, too). As it was just David and I for dinner, decided to do the male-bonding thing -grill steaks and bake potatoes. As he is 15, I was forced to make inroads on the 2000 Marquis de Terme (Margaux) by myself. It was approachable after about 30 minutes of air. Nose of dark berries and violets. On the palate very nice blackcurrant/cassis fruit, with medium tannins. As it sat (I nursed over several hours), the toasty oak aromas combined with some minerals and a little earth to make a very nice little package. This isn't a 30 year Margaux, but like the 1996 this should make a good candidate for a Bordeaux to drink 8 to 12 years after vintage. Good value in mid-$20s. A-/B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a pretty easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Dale
