TN: Southern Italy (no Sicily)

Friday Roger hosted our local non-serious group, theme was Southern Italy ( no Sicily). A nice assortment of cheese, charcuterie, etc, and some blind w ines. But first a white

2016 Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina Nice balance, peach and ripe apple, nutty note. B/B+

The reds #1 Dave guessed Primitivo before I even tasted. Brambly berries, a touch ho t, spicy. 2016 Castello Monaci “Piluna” Primitivo Salento I GT B-

#2 .Soft, easy, nice red plum and cherry fruit, a little sandalwood/incense . I guessed Montepuliciano d’Abruzzo. First 2 wines both by Monaci. 2016 Castello Monaci “Ilante” Salice Salentino. B

#3 mine so no guesses. Double-decanted about 2 hours earlier. Dark, dense, black fruit, anise, oak. Still quite tannic. 2006 Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici Riserva. B/B+

#4 My fave of the night. Black cherry, dried cherry. Cedar, leather, nicely balanced. Never had a Savuto before - apparently mostly Gaglioppo from Ca labria.2014 Odoardi Savuto. B+/B

#5 - darker fruits, earthy, a little barnyard on finish. 2015 Donato Angiul i Nero di Troia (Puglia) B/B-

#6 I have to say this was pretty vile- hot, volatile, and (thankfully) sh ort. Nasty overripe wine.

2013 Mille Una Primitivo Majara Salento C-

Fun night with guys, even if no star wines. Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a p arty where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivi ty, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
