TN Vieux Chateau Certan 1971

The Pomerol, in general, did quite well in 1971, and some of the better wines still are holding well. Many red 71 Bordeauxs from other regions are now a bit dry and lacking fruit.

I had nearly a case of Vieux Chateau Certan 1971 at one time, but now only one bottle remains after the one just opened. It has been ready and holding well for many years. This time it may have just a bit less fruit and may be a bit lighter. It probably will hold a few more years, but it would be best to finish it soon. The wine is still fairly deep in color with a bit of age showing around the rim. It is a very typical Pomerol with plenty of dark fruit. It is now fairly soft in texture, but has enough acid. It is not as full as the still very good Petrus 71, but then it cost me under US$10 vs $30+ for the Petrus many years ago. I have never had the 71 Trotanoy, but I have read rave reviews about it.
