TN: Wines I liked (from Corsica, Sicily, Canary Islands, Bordeaux, and California)

Monday was filet mignon, quinoa, and broccoli rabe, with the 2012 Edmunds S t John "Bone Jolly" Gamay Noir. Screwcapped, fresh acids, clean raspberry a nd cherry fruit, juicy, and just what I wanted in this wine. B+

Assorted leftovers on Wednesday, with the 2011 Abbatucci " Faustine" (Ajacc io), Peppery red fruit, spicy, nice balance of fruit and acids. Really nice finish, this is complex and refreshing. This is less expensive than a lot of the Abbatucci wines, and while still not cheap I think enough QPR to bu y again. B+

No wine with Chinese takeout before a board meeting Thursday, but Friday wi th oven baked pork chop, sauteed tomatoes, mixed grain medley, and cauliflo wer soup I opened the 2002 Fougas Maldoror (Cotes du Bourg). Still some tan nins, oak still apparent, modest black plum fruit at first, gets more expan sive with time. B

Saturday friends came over, dinner was a saffron accented seafood stew (shr imp, monkfish, and clams). We tried some wines:

2011 Terre Nere "Vigne Niche" Etna Bianco Apple and tropical fruits accented with a little oak, this would be a good ringer in a Meursault tasting. Very good length, good acids, I quite enjoy this. B+/A- 2009 Fronton de Oro "Malpais" (Gran Canaria) Raspberry and cranberry, peppery, green herb notes. Light to medium bodied, nice. B 2012 Terre Nere Etna Rosso Good acids, supple red fruits, a bit of tannin. Good. B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a pa rty where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivit y, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Nice to see wines from the Canary Islands making it to the other side of the Ocean. European Cellars is importing wines from Suertes del Marqus and they are very interesting. Have a look to this pdf from European Cellar's site (no affiliation) with The Wine Advocate writings from the winery:
