TNs - good and bad

I worry, on occasion, that posting only TNs of wines I liked removes some of whatever small value they may have :). Added to time constraints and lack of expertise, and I'm less active than I'd really like.

However, last night removed the first problem, so three recent notes:

  1. Wrongo Bongo (2004, I think, but after this, who cares?) - Spanish red, looked very much like an attempt to market after the fashion of recent mass-market Australian successes (Rosemount, Yellowtail, etc.). Horrendously awful: sour, thin, acidic, little detectable fruit or indeed flavour. Way below D. Wouldn't even make it to a vinegar crock if I had one. Did I mention we didn't like it? [This was one of my rare indulgences in buying a wine for the name... won't do that again for a while :)]

And hence some raves:

  1. Justin 2003 Paso Robles Cab Sauv. Mild tannins for a Cab; not brutal, but still vibrant and warm with lots of cherry and great feel - polished wood; balanced throughout. Yum: A-.

  1. White Hall (Virginia) 2003 Monticello Cab Franc. I've posted on previous vintages of this wine before, and it keeps getting better - I have no affiliation oter than having served the '96 at my wedding :). This has benefitted from the short time in bottle over the last year, and is now mellowed and very open; lighter than the Justin but still rich and curranty.

I didn;t care for the Wrongo Dongo either, but for different reasons- I found it very fruity, with lots of sweetness and little spine. My guess is this is negociant plonk and no two batches are the same. Thanks for notes.

Wonderful tasting note, Ewan! It makes me long for the days when wine publications had the space to devote to negative reviews -- it also reminds me of the infamous Python Australian wine tasting: "This is a wine for laying down... and avoiding." Given the name of this plonk, I suspect that it wasn't wine at all, but a clever use for that most hideous of concoctions, bongwater. Wrongo Bongo, indeed! :P

Which reminds me of the quip by Dorothy Parker:

"This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force."
