Tondonia Reserva 2001 (again)

Tondonia Reserva 2001 ****

Easter dinner was Leg of lamb with potato and asparagus gratin. So what win e to serve other than tondonia :) And I only have 2001 reserva. On opening it was lacking flavour. sawdust an d leather. Decanting, and having it with the lamb it came out to sing with dark cherry, almost toffee character. gritting tannins that I love, leather and cigar instead of sawdust. lingering finish. Got one left, need more.

I read that 2002 is not as good, is that correct, or is that the effect of aging 1 y more?

2001 is a great vintage in Rioja. 2002 is quite a weak one. That's in general, of course. Tondonia is famous for mixing some juice at least up to the limit of the 15% allowed by law, so maybe they compensate somehow.

Frankly, I found the 2002 quite watery. But I must say that I usually like Tondonia only in great years.

YMMV.
